For experienced scuba divers and beginners alike, there's plenty to see in the warm Mediterranean waters around Malta and Gozo. The tideless waters and gentle currents in the coastal bays offer a safe learning environment. For the sport diver, numerous caves, caverns and swim through locations are just waiting to be explored. Best of all, with good year round underwater visibility, you can spot the abundance of fish that inhabit the many wreaks around Malta and Gozo.
Beginners should opt for a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) accredited school offering the excellent Discover Scuba Diving course. Even if you don't know your fin from your flipper, fully trained instructors will have you out and diving in just one day. Most importantly, they'll teach you all the safety procedures beforehand, make sure you're OK with all the equipment, and then show you the most fantastic underwater sites they know!
More experienced divers can take open water courses or simply dive with an experienced guide for fun – and some amazing photo opportunities. There are PADI dive centres at St Julian's and St Paul's Bay, from which experienced divers can dive the wreak of a submarine, HMS Stubborn. Other wreaks include the Hellespont, a paddleboat steamer that sank just outside the harbour at St Paul's, and a World War Two Blenheim bomber complete with intact propellers.
On Gozo, the ‘must do' dive is Dwejra Bay, where divers disappear into a seemingly bottomless blue hole in the rocks and emerge by the famous stone arch.
There are PADI diving schools at St Paul's Bay, St Julian's and at Cirkewwa, a location that gives diving access to Gozo, Comino, and Cominetto. On Gozo, there is a PADI five star school at Xlendi Bay.
Completing your diving with a fine lunch in one of the good restaurants in Malta or Gozo will definitely be a good memory.
