Malta International Airport |
Flying to Malta lands you at Malta International Airport at Luqa, only 6km south of Valetta. The airport is small but sufficient, and you can catch a bus into Valetta or hail a taxi. Hire cars are close by, often with their desks perched out on the tarmac outside like kerbside preachers.
The national airline is Air Malta, which has regular scheduled services to the island from major European airports such as London, Paris and Rome. International carriers have regular services to Malta, including British Airways, Alitalia, Swissair and Lufthansa. It’s a gentle reminder that Malta is closer to Africa than Europe when you realize that Egypt Air also flies there! There are direct flights from destinations as far afield as Amsterdam and Cairo, Casablanca and Hamburg, Moscow and Oslo.
Charter flights can often be bought separately from tour operators, such as Thompsonfly and Thomas Cook in the UK, and Jetairfly in Belgium, as you in effect take up spare seats unsold through holiday packages. Other charter operators include Excel Airways, who offer very reasonable fares on the net. However, the number of seats are limited, so book early if you need to travel on a particular date.
If you are traveling to Gozo, the fastest way is to take the helicopter service, which takes only ten minutes to whisk you from Luqa to Xewkija. The flight times vary according to the season.
Malta International Airport is keen to promote itself, and sponsors a variety of arts events, including opera concerts and a competition for an art installation in the new Schengen arrivals building.
